Hi friends,
In this edition of Pastor’s Cut, we’re digging a little deeper into Ephesians 3:1–13. I love this passage. Here are two key insights that reveal just how extraordinary Paul’s vision of the church really is.
1. The church is God’s announcement of victory to the spiritual powers (v. 10). Paul says that God’s “manifold wisdom” is being made known through the church to the “rulers and authorities” in the heavenly places. That Greek word polypoikilos, translated “manifold,” means “richly varied or multifaceted.” Here’s why this is important. Usually, we think that God displays his wisdom primarily through powerful miracles or impressive institutions. Paul says that God actually displays it through a community of reconciled people! As we’ve been talking about, Jews and Gentiles were separated by deep religious and cultural divisions. Their unity in Christ demonstrated that God’s purposes were overcoming the forces of division. In Ephesians, the “rulers and authorities” belong to a larger cosmic drama (1:21; 6:12). The church’s very existence announces to the spiritual realm that God’s new creation has begun.
2. Paul’s suffering reveals a surprising definition of glory (vv. 1, 13). Paul begins by identifying himself as a “prisoner of Christ Jesus” and concludes by telling the Ephesians that his suffering is “your glory.” This is a reversal of conventional ideas about honor and shame. In the Roman world, imprisonment was associated with disgrace. Yet Paul interprets his chains as evidence of his participation in God’s eternal purposes. His imprisonment is connected to his mission of bringing Gentiles into God’s family. In other words, what looks like humiliation from the world’s perspective becomes a testimony to God’s grace. This reflects the deeper pattern of the cross; God’s glory is often revealed through what the world considers weakness. Faithfulness cannot always be measured by comfort, influence, or visible success.
Some items to pray for:
* Lord, help me see the church as you see it—a community through which your wisdom and grace are revealed.
* Jesus, expose the divisions and prejudices in my heart that undermine the unity you’ve created.
* Holy Spirit, give me courage to remain faithful when obedience is costly, trusting that you can work through weakness.
May God continue to deepen our understanding of his Word and shape us into a community that reflects his extraordinary grace.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Ben
